Just hold on a darn minute, mister know-it-all. I just got off the phone with 'Lock Em Up' Locklear himself, and yes, that is him. Kawasaki flew him up to New York to ride their new highly secret, experimental, prototype, skunk works special S-1MX...

Hey Joe !!!
Not sure where my original message to you went ??? But here goes. The reason I asked about how you did was when I received Ed's entry,Kevin also sent the original Race Order and the handwritten finishing order sheets for 2 250 Jr. heats you were in.I'll give them to you along with Ed's entry. The sheets showed Jack O'leary won the 1st heat with you second. You won the 2nd heat and Jackie was 3rd so it appeared you got the overall as there is point tally's on the 2nd moto sheet. What's strange is the race order lists a 3rd 250 Jr. Moto 1st thing on Sunday followed immediately by the 1st 500 Scrambles Moto.So maybe The 3rd Moto was scrapped to avoid guys like you having to race back to back.I'm also getting the Entries for both Jack O'leary and Mike McFarlane and am trying to locate them.

Hey Joe- I've checked out the dvd and there is some really cool old footage. So far I think I've seen Tim Hart at Green Valley with the baloons, looked like Ed on a Husky in a blue jean jacket, myself, and you as well. Is that Billy#12 or #13 on the Bul? I know thats Billy doing the wheeley on the El Bandito at Green Valley. Man there is some real good footage of you at the Golden Eagles track, or it looks like it. I'll have to watch it several more times! Thanks again Joe for the dvd, and they sure had some nice old scooters at LOP, you really got some excellent pictures! Keep posting!

Hey Joe,

So you had a not so great introduction to the infamous Saddleback hardpack clay!! Saddleback and Carlsbad were hard as concrete in the summer, and the worst sticky mud you can imagine in the winter. The 2.75 Barum might have been ok for some loomy euro tracks, but were totally inadequate for SoCal. If you went down at speed it wasn't uncommon to see sparks coming off your footpegs as your bike went sliding by.

My first real race bike was a 73 CZ 250 red coffin tanker that I bought by mowing lawns.

Here's a Rex Staten story... In 73 Saddleback installed a forward falling starting gate. On the first weekend that the gate was installed and put into service I was in the 250 intermediate class, and my race staged after Rex's 250/500 ex/pro class so I saw this story happpen first hand. For his first moto Rex started a couple of feet back from the gate like everybody else. For the second moto we were all amazed when at the last minute Rex pushed his bike back and started about 30-40 feet behind everybody else. Rex got moving as soon as the starter got close to the gate drop handle. Rex hit the gate in probably 3rd gear and holeshot his class by at least 25 yards. The next weekend Saddleback instituted the Rex rule as everybody called it, and you had to start with both wheels on the newly poured concrete starting pad. Soon after Saddleback installed a backwards falling gate. Rick

Well I'll be, that is to cool- The bike really looks pristine in those pics- how would you like to have one right now in that kind of shape?

Hey Joe - I'm glad you posted those pics and it is such a shame you lost everything in the fire. I don't think you flooded the site, some of the people seem to go a little over board, and it seems like there is not enough time for people to really digest what they are seeing, I think yours was just right. I hope you still got a few more pics to post hiding away somewhere because you really a perspective on this sport that not many have experienced, the way you have. I'm going to try and make it to the Ant Hill, maybe your hip will feel well enough to kick Tim off the ride, and you can hop on this thing and smoke em. Thanks also for your kind comments as well Joe, your a true friend bro and love you back. Hope to see you at the Ant Hill.

Hi Joe,

I'm from Orange County, Cal. I never raced dist 37. I only lived 20 minutes from Saddleback in the 60's, and 70's. I raced Saddleback, Carlsbad, Escape Country, and most of the other local So-Cal tracks all the time. I used to ditch school with my girlfriend to practice at Saddleback. Now, I have to take care of my knee's, to avoid knee replacement, so I don't get on the track too often, but I still trail ride out in the desert.

joe,
Have you ever worked with superchargers? What issues will I be up against on motors from the 90-300 cc range?
