I had the same year YZ100 with 3 different pipes. One was a Snake Pipe that would come off of the cylinder after every big jump. The engine was blueprinted, ported and had a huge Mikuni carb that sucked pre-mix I bought it used from Tim Oliver.

Airport MX was just south of Hwy 183, west of Hwy 360 and east of County Line MX. they were close (geographically), but not the same. The place wasn't around for too long. maybe a couple of years. I remember racing there in late 74' or early 75'. ...

Chance, those Pentons were fast in the day and they handled well so they had it all in my opinion. I still associate myself with Penton-KTM but there were times that other opportunities would come around such as the Kawasaki's thruogh Terry's Kawasaki which was close by and Ray Spears was the mechanic. Kimbrell's Maico ride was also attractive because I always had a fresh bike and a Mechanic that took care of everything. Regarding the 125 Husky, that was tough, Super Sycle had close almost over night and I was left without anything to ride. Terry's Kawasaki had that Husky 125 left over and offered it to me with a KX 250 and KX125 rotory on the way. Ray Spears pounded every hp possible out of that husky and it still couldnt out run the Elsinore, but it did handle well, it really tought me to come into corners harder and momentum out which was great when carried over to 250 class. I remember Robbie well and also liked Bultacos. I still have my first Sherpa S 100, I was never offered a ride from Bultaco over all those years . Skipper was a good rider and was small which I think attributed to alot holeshots for him. Last but not least the first turn at Whitney; I remember now that I was involve with several high speed crashes off the start at Whitney and vowed to not get mixed up in the middle of all that again. At Mossier I would start on the absolute inside spot and at Whitney on the absolut outside spot, hold it on, flat track the outside line and slingshot toward the second turn. It kept me out of traffic and was pretty effective. Chance thanks for asking I enjoy re' living those days.

Hi Chance, regarding going to Maico, I had a long love hate relationship with Penton-KTM, about every three years they would take me for granted and that called for a brand change. Johnny Kimbrell offered me a program that included two 250's and two open bikes a year from Maico and he took care of all the upkeep on the bikes. It worked out great, I was burned out on working on them and just wanted to pick them up Friday or Saturday and bring them back on Monday. I had just returned from a broken hip at Tx Stadium and people thought my winning days were over. Those next few years on Maico were some of my best, the 250 was a little down on horse power but made up for it in handleing and the 400 was great all around. Lee Barclay was the mechanic, I ran into him a few years ago, but havnt seen or heard from Johnny in many years, if you know where he is please let me know.

I don't know if I've met you or not, but welcome to this site here that so many racers, has been racers, used to be racers, wore out racers and maybe even a few wanna be racers seem to enjoy. You'll read a lot of history, lots of facts, lots of opinions, and lots of exaggerations and embellishments too, especially when some of these old racers start talkin bout how fast they were. Endless BS about how fast their bikes were. You probably know the drill. But it's all in fun. So jump in, read a little, then share some of your stories and BS with everybody. Welcome...............
